Understanding Anxiety Disorders

What do you think of when you hear the word anxiety? You probably think of situations in the past that caused you to feel anxious, as well as related words such as discomfort, restlessness and nervousness. Anxiety isn’t enjoyable, but luckily most of us only have to experience it in certain situations.

Imagine that feeling never going away, feeling anxious and nervous about even the smallest of things. This is something that people suffering from anxiety disorders go through every single day. Unfortunately, many of us don’t have an understanding of these disorders, which in turn makes us have a lack of compassion when it comes to people suffering from these anxiety disorders. That’s why today we want to help give you an understanding of the everyday life of someone who is suffering from an anxiety disorder.


What Are Anxiety Disorders?

Like other mental health conditions, anxiety disorders are not something that can be controlled. It is the effect of biological, physiological and environmental factors. Anxiety disorders can happen at anytime, anywhere. They can not be controlled and cannot be stopped.

There are many different forms of anxiety disorders. This includes panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder – among others. These disorders can severely inhibit daily life for those suffering from it and can make the symptoms even worse. Over time, the disorder can cause the sufferer to lose their jobs, friends and cause depression and suicidal thoughts.


Can Anxiety Disorders Be Cured?

While there is no permanent cure for anxiety disorders, they can be managed, If managed properly, those who suffer from anxiety disorders can go on to live normal lives and not be held back by their disorders. However, in most cases these disorders can’t be managed alone – it’s important to get help.

The best method for managing an anxiety disorder is with counseling. Counseling provides the assistance the those who suffer disorders need. In many cases, those who are suffering from anxiety-related problems can feel better by even just having an outlet to discuss their feelings. In cases such as OCD, being reassured of their issues and being told that it is OCD that is causing their issues can give a sense of reassurance to the sufferer.

Aside from counseling, there are many other ways to decrease the symptoms of anxiety disorders. For example, exercising regularly is a great way to cope with the stress caused by anxiety. It can also make you feel healthier and more confident in your body image, reducing the anxiety symptoms.

Lastly, often times you can kill anxiety at the source. While some people naturally acquire anxiety disorders, many times it is caused by substance abuse. Alcoholism and drug addiction can cause anxiety disorders that are magnified when under the influence. The only way to cure these symptoms is by eliminating the cause – give up the substance. While this is obviously easier said than done, it will feel better in the long run.
