How To Be More Optimistic

Have you felt down recently? Perhaps your job isn’t the dream job you imagined, or you recently broke up with your partner or have been running into financial troubles. Whatever the reason, it’s completely normal for us to go through issues that make us feel down. If we’re not careful, this can change how we look at life and send us spiraling down toward a more toxic personality.

It’s important that no matter how bad things get, you stay optimistic. Doing so can improve your mental health and even spread toward the people around you. But how do you change your outlook on life? It’s actually very simple, which is why today Holy Cross is going to be giving you some tips on being more optimistic!

 

Get Out There!

The first tip is to get yourself out there and become more social – no matter how badly you hate it. When you’re feeling down, the last thing you want to do is socialize. Most people would rather just sit home alone and dwell on their feelings. However, doing this will inevitably make you feel worse as dwelling on negative thoughts can end up building that negativity up even more.

Socializing will not only help lift your spirits, but it will boost your confidence in yourself. Talking with people and making friends is a great way to get over your rough spot, and will show yourself that you are a great and a likeable person!

 

Know That Feelings Pass

When something negative happens in life, our brains sometimes put unrealistic feelings in our mind. Often times in the case of something like a break-up or death of a loved one, it can often feel like the sadness and hurt will never go away. If we let ourselves think like that – then it may very well never change.

When something negative happens, you must remember to talk to yourself. Tell yourself that everything will get better, that these negative feelings will pass with time. Only you can get yourself through this dark period – you just have to let yourself be more optimistic about the future.

 

Stop Comparing Yourself To Others

“Stephanie is the same age as me and makes $100,000 per year.” “Tim is already married. Why aren’t I?” Comparing yourself to others is a terrible way to live life. You have to remember that you are your own person – and comparing yourself to others will always end in disappointment.

“The grass is always greener on the other side.” Is a phrase that everyone should live by. While it may not sound very optimistic, it actually is! The best way to be optimistic is by only focusing on yourself. Look at where you are. Look to where you want to be. By focusing on yourself rather than comparing yourself to others, you will find yourself more goal-oriented and more optimistic about life.
