A Legacy of Service

Where We Come From

Holy Cross Services (HCS) was founded as Boysville of Michigan, Inc. through the collaboration of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Detroit and the Catholic bishops of Michigan, the Michigan Knights of Columbus, and the Brothers of the Holy Cross. Inaugurated on October 24, 1948, by His Eminence Edward Cardinal Mooney with assistance from Bishops from Grand Rapids, Lansing, Marquette, and Saginaw; the agency began as a boarding school for orphaned Catholic boys and those from troubled homes, a cause close to the hearts of Michigan’s Catholic community.

In 2018, HCS became an independent non-profit entity and no longer fell under the Michigan Catholic Conference, while remaining closely tied to the Catholic Church and her social and moral teaching. We continue to partner closely with the Michigan Knights of Columbus, a key supporter of the agency since its inception in 1948.
