Resume structure

Coming up with the overall structure of your resume is important. You’ll want to choose the best layout that suits your skills and the type of job you want. Fortunately, there are hundreds of free templates to

be found that can get you started. In addition to the free templates offered by companies like Microsoft and Google, there are many more available online.Once you have the template, you’ll want to describe your work experience. When doing this, be sure to back up any general descriptions with important and tangible details. For example, if you’re outlining your data-entry skills, be sure to include information about the types of programs you can use in an office setting. If there’s no room to include it in each of the sections, you can always add it to a Skills section, which can consist of a bullet list of your most valuable assets.

Finding the right wording

Most often, each resume gets an initial 25- or 30-second look. Managers will quickly glance over the document and quickly determine if it’s a keeper or not. That’s why the layout and language is so important.

You’ll have a better chance of someone hanging onto your resume after the initial scan if you include the important words used in the job posting. If the job requires you to “communicate” with clients or “greet and direct” all visitors, then you could use those terms when describing your own work experiences. Once your resume’s been added to the first round of successful candidates, you’ve guaranteed a closer look at your application. Now you’re one step closer to getting an interview.

Stand out with description

When it comes time to write out your resume, there are a few things you can do to improve the odds of having a potential employer take a closer look at you.

Use appropriately sized fonts for headers and sections that easily guide the readers eye through the highlights of your resume. You can also use bold headers if that helps bring attention to where it’s needed. Also, cater each resume to the specific job you want by highlighting the skills that best suit the position. Describe your related experience, so the manager sees how you’d be a great fit for the organization.

Catch the imagination

Grab the manager’s attention right away by providing a detailed description of your experiences instead of a more generic statement about how hard you’ll work. This approach will set you apart from the rest of the applicants.

Far too many resumes have blanket statements that tell the managers nothing about the applicant, as in: I’m seeking a position that allows me to use my skills and strong work ethic to benefit your company and improve your business.

Instead, come up with a statement that illustrates your successes. Think about the problems the company may have and provide a similar example where you came up with a solution in your previous experience.

Following these guidelines will help you catch the eyes of potential employers and, hopefully, get you the interview you need to land the job. Remember to use words and formatting to help your stand out to any manager looking at your resume. Think about the type of job you want and come up with a strategy before you even sit down to write.

And hang on to every resume you finish. Each one can be saved as a template for the different industries or sectors that fit your skill sets. With a template on file, the next job you apply for will be much easier. All you need are a few tweaks to direct it toward the company and you’ll be on your way.
