Why Troubled Youths Deserve a Second Chance

Youth are prone to getting into trouble. We see it all the time, even in adults. It’s almost a direct correlation – troubled youth leads to a lifetime of getting into trouble with the law, money, and the wrong people. In society, people are quick to label troubled youth as ‘trouble makers’ and dismiss them. However, this is the wrong approach. Today we will be talking about why troubled youths deserve a second chance, and how it can lead to a lifetime of better decisions.

Forgiveness Can Spread

One of the biggest reasons a second chance is so effective is not only because it allows them to correct past mistakes they’ve made, but it also teaches them the importance of forgiveness. Forgiveness is something that many troubled do not see around them. Many of them see violence, drugs and things that no child should see.

By showing forgiveness, they will be seeing first hand that things can get better. People can be understanding. People are there to help. It’s important that a troubled youth sees this firsthand, as not seeing it can lead to a lifetime of trouble.

To See That There Are Other Options

Most troubled youths are not doing the things they do because they see it as fun. They do it because often times it’s seen as the only way to get by in life. They don’t know any other way. By not giving these youths a second chance, you’re also taking away the hope they can have in finding other options to take in life.

By giving a second chance and teaching rather than punishing, we are showing these youths that other options are available for them. We can show them how to hone their skills and put them to good use. We can help them discover their passions and create a pathway to success for them.

They Are Only Youths

At the end of the day, these troubled youths are just that – youths. We simply can not treat them as if they have the life knowledge of an adult. They do not yet have the ability to decipher the meaning of long-term consequences.

We were all young at a point. Remember back to those days – when making decisions were you thinking about the future? In most cases, we weren’t. When we made our decisions we made it based on the present. We didn’t put any thought into the future.

This is the case with most of these troubled youths. They don’t think about what the future has in store for them and how their bad decisions can potentially affect the rest of their lives. This is why a second chance is so important – they need to realize the importance of their decisions before it is too late.

While many people view troubled youths as lost causes, it’s important that we remember that at the end of the day they are just children who don’t yet know the importance of life decisions. Rather than punishing, teaching can easily rectify the wrongs they have done and ensure that they start working on the pathway to success.
