What to Do if Someone is Overdosing
We’ve already talked about the signs and symptoms of overdosing, but it’s also important to know what to do in the situation if you see someone overdosing. While you’re probably not a doctor or have any medical expertise, there still are things that you can do to help someone who is overdosing. Today we will be laying out the things you should or shouldn’t do in this awful situation.
Call 9-11
This may seem obvious to most, but it’s still something that needs to be reiterated. If you see someone overdosing, do not hesitate – call 9-11. Even if you’re in a situation where you think you may get in trouble, calling an ambulance is still a must. Do not try to drive them to the hospital yourself – ambulances are equipped with the proper equipment to try and keep them stable on the way to the hospital. They also know how to properly handle someone who is overdosing.
Check Vital Signs
If someone is overdosing, after calling 9-11 you’ll need to check their vital signs. Check the person’s airway, breathing and pulse. If you know CPR you may need to perform it. It’s important that all vital signs are checked, as it can greatly change the situation.
If the person is breathing, make sure you put them in the recovery position. This can ensure that they don’t choke on the own vomit. You will also want to provide them with warmth, loosen clothing to allow easier breathing.
If the person is conscious, provide reassurance. Keeping them calm is incredibly important. If they’re not calm, they can end up hurting themselves even more or hurt others. Keeping them calm will also ensure the situation goes smoothly once the ambulance arrives.
What NOT to Do
There are things that you should absolutely not do if put in this situation. In the case of someone overdosing, every second can count. Every little mistake will count in this situation. Even though it may feel right, do not do these:
Do not jeopardize yours or others’ safety. Certain drugs can cause people to become unpredictable and violent – even if they’re in the process of overdosing. If this is the case, do not try to get near the person. Wait for a professional to assist you in handling the situation.
Do not try to reason with the person. They’re not in the right frame of mind to know what is going on. If they tell you that they feel fine, do not take their word into account. Their behavior is influenced by the drugs they have taken.
Do not offer your opinions unless you are a medical professional. While you may be able to help the situation by putting them in the recovery position and performing CPR, offering your opinion in this situation is not needed. Do not scold, do not get angry, do not ask questions. Focus on getting them help.
An overdose is a terrifying and stressful situation for everyone involved. However, there are things you can do to help the situation. If you know someone who is at risk of overdosing due to drug use do not hesitate. Kairos Healthcare and Holy Cross Counseling can help
